The dark blue-green leaves are thick and heavily puckered, giving them excellent texture and good slug resistance.

The clump grows 18 to 24 inches tall and 3 to nearly 4 feet wide. White flowers rise just above the foliage in early summer. It has earned several hosta society awards and a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, and makes a fine specimen in the shade.

What it looks like

A mounded clump 18 to 24 inches tall and 36 to 45 inches wide of thick, round leaves in dark blue-green with a heavily seersuckered, puckered surface. Each leaf is deeply cupped upward, forming bowl-like shapes up to 3 inches deep. In early summer, stems about 22 inches tall carry white bell-shaped flowers just above the leaves. At peak the plant is a mound of blue-green cups with white flowers barely clearing the top.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, so grow this one in a shaded bed away from the lavender, alongside ferns, astilbe or coral bells.

Care

Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Its thick leaves resist slug damage well.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: White

Foliage: Dark blue-green, heavily puckered

Growth habit: Mounded clump of cupped leaves

Mature size: 18–24 in tall × 36–45 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Late-June

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 20-cell plug tray: 20 large, field-ready plugs of this variety (cells about 2¾ in. wide × 3¼ in. deep or deeper), ready to plant out or pot up.
