Each plant blooms in one color, so a group creates a lively, multicolored planting.

The plants are bushy and well-branched, 2 to 2.5 feet tall, and flower from early summer into early fall, even in their first year. They are tough, drought tolerant and loved by butterflies and bees.

What it looks like

An upright, well-branched clump about 22 to 30 inches tall and 18 to 28 inches wide. Leaves are lance-shaped to oval, 3 to 6 inches long, dark green with a coarse, slightly rough texture, forming a dense base with smaller leaves up the sturdy stems. Single daisy-like flowers 3 to 4 inches across have broad ray petals held horizontally or slightly drooping around a raised, spiny, orange-brown cone; each plant blooms in one color, from tomato red, bright orange and magenta to golden yellow, cream and white. At peak bloom the plant carries many flowers at once, held on strong stems well above the leaves.

Growing it with lavender

It enjoys the same sun and well-drained soil as lavender, and its mix of warm colors brightens a lavender planting from early summer into fall.

Care

Plant in full sun to light part shade in average to lean, well-drained soil; it handles heat and dry spells once established and dislikes wet winter soil. Hardy in zones 4-9.
