cranberry-cocktail-dianthus-72-cell-plug-tray
Cranberry Cocktail Dianthus - 72-Cell Plug Tray

Cranberry Cocktail has large, full, double flowers in hot magenta pink that look and smell like small carnations. The 2-inch blooms rise above a dense clump of wide, gray-green leaves.

The semi-evergreen foliage stays attractive most of the year, and the clove-scented flowers are fine for small bouquets. The main flush comes in early summer; shear the plant lightly afterward and it will flower again in early fall. It is right at home edging a sunny border, in rock gardens and in mixed containers.

What it looks like

A low, dense mound about 8 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 14 inches wide of grassy foliage. Leaves are narrow, linear and pointed, 1 to 3 inches long, gray-green with a smooth, waxy surface. Fully double, carnation-like flowers about 2 inches across have ruffled, serrated petals in hot magenta pink. Flowers are held on short, straight stems a few inches above the leaves. At peak bloom the foliage mound is almost hidden under a dense layer of flowers.

Growing it with lavender

It shares lavender's need for sun and lean, well-drained soil, and its magenta flowers are a bright partner to lavender in early summer.

Care

Plant in full sun to light part shade in average, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells and dislikes wet, heavy soil, especially in winter. Hardy in zones 4-9. Shear the plant back lightly after the early-summer flush to encourage a second round of flowers in early fall.

At a glance

Botanical name: Dianthus

Flower color: Hot magenta pink

Foliage: Gray-green

Growth habit: Dense, clumping mound

Mature size: 8–10 in tall × 12–14 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 4–9

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade

Bloom start: Early-June

Peak bloom: Mid-June

Bloom pattern: Repeat Blooming

Deer resistance: Moderately resistant

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
