Its narrow, chartreuse leaves are so heavily rippled that the whole plant looks wiggly, forming an arching clump about 6 inches tall and 16 inches wide.

Morning sun brings out the brightest chartreuse, and mature plants develop red-speckled leaf stalks. Lavender flowers top the clump in midsummer. It was named Hosta of the Year in 2016 and is great in containers or at the front of a border, especially next to blue hostas.

What it looks like

A low, arching clump about 6 inches tall and 16 inches wide of narrow, strap-like leaves in bright chartreuse yellow, each leaf extremely rippled and wavy along its entire length. Mature plants show red speckles on the leaf stalks. In midsummer, stems about 16 inches tall carry lavender bell flowers above the clump. At peak the plant is a small, tangled-looking tuft of wavy yellow-green ribbons topped with lavender bells.

Growing it with lavender

It needs richer, moister soil and more shade than lavender, so give it a spot on the north side of the house or under a tree canopy with other shade plants.

Care

Best in part to full shade; morning sun gives the brightest chartreuse. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: Lavender

Foliage: Bright chartreuse

Growth habit: Low, arching, wavy clump

Mature size: 6 in tall × 16 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Early-July

Peak bloom: Mid-July

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
