The leaves can reach about 9 inches wide and 11 inches long, giving it bold texture in shade.

The clump grows 24 to 30 inches tall and 4 to 4½ feet wide. Pale lavender flowers appear in early to midsummer. It pairs well with ferns, hellebores and other hostas, and was named a national Hosta of the Year in 2022.

What it looks like

A large, mounded clump 24 to 30 inches tall and 48 to 54 inches wide of big, thick, heart-shaped blue leaves up to 9 inches wide and 11 inches long, heavily corrugated with wavy margins. In early summer, stems 25 to 28 inches tall carry pale lavender bell flowers. At peak the plant is a wide blue mound of rippled, textured leaves with soft lavender spires.

Growing it with lavender

It needs richer, moister soil and more shade than lavender, so give it a spot on the north side of the house or under a tree canopy with other shade plants.

Care

Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Thick leaves hold up well to slugs.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: Pale lavender

Foliage: Blue

Growth habit: Large, mounded clump

Mature size: 24–30 in tall × 4 ft–54 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Late-June

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
