dragon-slayer-yucca-72-cell-plug-tray
Dragon Slayer Yucca - 72-Cell Plug Tray

Dragon Slayer is a tough, compact yucca that forms a round rosette of rigid, powdery blue leaves. It thrives in hot, dry places with almost no care and keeps its shape and color all year.

As plants mature, tall branched stalks about 4 feet high carry creamy white flowers in early summer. Deer and rabbits leave it alone, and it is a natural fit for rock gardens, dry slopes and large patio containers.

What it looks like

Stiff, narrow, sword-shaped leaves with sharp tips radiate evenly from a central crown to form a near-perfect round rosette. The foliage is a chalky powder blue with a slightly waxy finish. The rosette is about 24 inches tall and 30 to 36 inches wide. At maturity a stout, branched stalk about 4 feet tall rises from the center, lined with many nodding, bell-shaped creamy white flowers. At peak bloom the tall white candelabra of flowers stands above the symmetrical blue ball of leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Dragon Slayer wants the same full sun and dry, lean soil as lavender, and its powder-blue rosette pairs naturally with lavender's gray-green foliage and purple spikes.

Care

Plant in full sun for the best form and color, in well-drained soil of any quality; it is very drought tolerant once rooted. Hardy in zones 5 to 10. Cut spent flower stalks at the base and remove any old lower leaves in spring.

At a glance

Botanical name: Yucca

Flower color: Creamy white

Foliage: Powdery blue

Growth habit: Rounded rosette

Mature size: 24 in tall × 30–36 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 5–10

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade

Bloom start: Late-June

Peak bloom: Early-July

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Resistant

Pollinator value: Fair

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
