earlybird-purple-blue-columbine-72-cell-plug-tray
Earlybird™ Purple Blue Columbine - 72-Cell Plug Tray

Earlybird Purple Blue is an early-flowering columbine with wine purple flowers and indigo blue centers. The nodding, spurred blooms appear from late spring into early summer, among the first perennials to bring color to a partly shaded garden.

It forms a neat mound about two feet tall and wide and is lovely allowed to naturalize in woodland borders. The flowers last up to two weeks in a vase. Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies visit the blooms, and rabbits tend to avoid it.

What it looks like

Upward-facing to slightly nodding flowers 1.5 to 2 inches across with five wine purple petal-like sepals and short spurs, surrounding a cup of indigo blue petals and a tuft of yellow stamens. Flowers are carried on slender, branching stems above the foliage. Leaves are soft blue-green to medium green, rounded, lobed and fan-like, similar to maidenhair fern. The plant is a neat mound 20 to 24 inches tall and wide. At peak bloom the mound is sprinkled with purple and blue flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Columbine likes more moisture and some shade compared with lavender, so give it a spot in a partly shaded border or woodland edge, where it blooms in late spring before lavender begins.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil with regular moisture; afternoon shade extends the bloom. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Deadhead spent flowers to tidy the plant, or leave a few to self-sow; cut back tired foliage after bloom to get a fresh flush of leaves.

At a glance

Botanical name: Aquilegia

Flower color: Wine purple with indigo blue centers

Foliage: Medium green

Growth habit: Neat, rounded mound

Mature size: 20–24 in tall × 20–24 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 4–9

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade

Bloom start: Mid-May

Peak bloom: Late-May

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Moderately resistant

Pollinator value: Great

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
