Its huge, thick, dark green leaves are deeply veined and can grow more than 1½ feet long and wide, forming a very tall, strongly upright clump.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eMature plants reach 3 to 4 feet tall and 5 to 6 feet wide, though it takes about five years in the ground to reach full size. Pale reddish violet flowers appear just above the leaves in early to midsummer. It was named a national Hosta of the Year in 2023 and makes a real conversation piece.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eWhat it looks like\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eA massive, strongly upright clump 36 to 48 inches tall and 60 to 72 inches wide of enormous, thick, dark green leaves more than 18 inches long and wide, with deep parallel veins. In early to midsummer, stems about 4 feet tall carry pale reddish violet bell flowers just above the foliage. At peak the plant is a towering dark green fountain of giant leaves.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eGrowing it with lavender\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt needs richer, moister soil and more shade than lavender, so give it a spot on the north side of the house or under a tree canopy with other shade plants.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eCare\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eGrows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear.
