The speckled pattern makes every leaf a little different.

The clump grows 20 to 22 inches tall and 3 to 3½ feet wide. Near-white flowers rise on 24- to 28-inch stems in early summer. It is a collector's plant for specimens, borders and containers.

What it looks like

A mounded clump 20 to 22 inches tall and 36 to 42 inches wide of broad leaves with creamy white centers finely misted with green speckles and dark green margins lightly flecked with pale speckles, a reverse pattern of the center. In early summer, stems 24 to 28 inches tall carry near-white bell flowers. At peak the plant is a speckled cream-and-green mound with pale flowers above.

Growing it with lavender

It needs richer, moister soil and more shade than lavender, so give it a spot on the north side of the house or under a tree canopy with other shade plants.

Care

Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. Watch for slugs in damp springs.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: Near white

Foliage: Creamy white flecked with green, dark green margins flecked with cream

Growth habit: Mounded clump

Mature size: 20–22 in tall × 36–42 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Late-June

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 20-cell plug tray: 20 large, field-ready plugs of this variety (cells about 2¾ in. wide × 3¼ in. deep or deeper), ready to plant out or pot up.
