Wide, irregular blue-green margins surround a center that changes through the season, from chartreuse to yellow to creamy yellow and finally white, with fern green streaks painted between. No two leaves look quite alike.

The clump grows about 20 inches tall and 40 inches wide, and its thick leaves resist slugs. Dense clusters of white flowers sit just above the foliage in early to midsummer. It has earned several top hosta society awards.

What it looks like

A mounded clump about 20 inches tall and 40 inches wide of thick, puckered, broadly oval leaves with wide, irregular blue-green margins and centers that shift from chartreuse to yellow to creamy white, with fern green streaks between center and margin. In early to midsummer, stems about 24 inches tall carry dense clusters of white bell flowers just above the leaves. At peak the plant is a textured blue-and-cream mound topped with white flowers.

Growing it with lavender

It needs richer, moister soil and more shade than lavender, so give it a spot on the north side of the house or under a tree canopy with other shade plants.

Care

Grows best in part to full shade. Give it evenly moist, humus-rich soil that drains well, and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 3-9. Cut the foliage down after hard frost, and divide crowded clumps in spring as new shoots appear. It grows slowly; its thick leaves resist slugs.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: White

Foliage: Blue-green margins with chartreuse to creamy white centers

Growth habit: Mounded clump

Mature size: 20 in tall × 40 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Early-July

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
