The leaves are heart-shaped and deeply puckered, and they show their bluest color in spring.

Near-white, bell-shaped flowers open on tall blue-green stems in early summer, reaching about 4 feet. It is a specimen plant: give it room at a bend in a shady path, at the back of a woodland bed, or anywhere you want one bold plant to anchor the view.

What it looks like

Very large, heart-shaped blue-green leaves with a heavily corrugated, seersucker-like surface and a powdery blue cast that is strongest in spring. Leaves overlap to form a massive, rounded dome about 36 inches tall and up to 7 feet wide. Blue-green flower scapes rise to about 4 feet in early summer, carrying loose clusters of near-white, bell-shaped flowers held well above the foliage. The leaf surface is thick and matte, and deep veins run from the midrib to the edges. At peak the plant reads as a huge, cool blue mound with pale flower spikes above it.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring as the shoots emerge.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: Near white

Foliage: Blue-green, bluest in spring

Growth habit: Massive, dome-shaped mound

Mature size: 36 in tall × 7 ft wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Late-June

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
