Its long, heart-shaped leaves open chartreuse in spring and ripen to a warm golden yellow, with deeply sunken veins that give each leaf strong texture and depth.

The clump grows quickly to about 3 to 3½ feet tall and 6 to 7 feet wide, so it makes an instant focal point. Pale lavender flowers appear in early to midsummer on scapes up to about 3½ feet. Plant one where it can brighten a dark back corner, or repeat several along the rear of a large shade border.

What it looks like

Very large, smooth, elongated heart-shaped leaves in golden yellow, emerging chartreuse in spring and maturing to gold. Each leaf has deeply impressed parallel veins that create ridges across the blade and a slightly glossy surface. The plant forms a huge, broad clump about 36 to 42 inches tall and 6 to 7 feet wide. In early to midsummer, upright scapes rise to about the height of the foliage or a little above, carrying pale lavender trumpet-shaped flowers. At peak the whole plant glows yellow-gold against darker surrounding greenery.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring as the shoots emerge.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: Pale lavender

Foliage: Chartreuse aging to golden yellow

Growth habit: Very large, broad clump

Mature size: 36–42 in tall × 6 ft–7 ft wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Late-June

Peak bloom: Early-July

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
