Bright, filtered shade brings out the strongest gold in the margins.

It grows to about 2 feet tall and roughly 4 to 4½ feet wide. Near-white flowers are held well above the leaves on tall scapes. It is easy to grow and works as a specimen, in a mass planting, or in a big container on a shaded patio.

What it looks like

Broad, heart-shaped medium green leaves with a vivid gold margin of even width around each edge. Leaves are smooth with light parallel veining and a slight wave. The plant forms a wide mound about 26 to 28 inches tall and 50 to 56 inches across. Tall scapes hold near-white trumpet flowers well above the foliage. At peak the gold edges trace a crisp outline on every leaf across the mound.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9.
