The spikes are thick and conical, fullest at the base and tapering to a point of unopened buds. Leaves are palmate with narrow, soft green leaflets radiating in a circle, held on short stalks. The plant forms a compact upright clump about 14 to 16 inches tall and 7 to 9 inches wide.
