mini-gallery-yellow-lupine-72-cell-plug-tray
Mini Gallery™ Yellow Lupine - 72-Cell Plug Tray

Mini Gallery™ Yellow offers solid yellow lupine spikes on a compact, early-blooming plant. The soft, sunny color brightens the garden in early summer and mixes easily with blues and purples.

At around 14 to 16 inches tall, it suits the front of the border, small gardens and mass plantings. The spikes hold up well in a vase, and bees, butterflies and hummingbirds come to the flowers.

What it looks like

Short, dense conical spikes are covered in pea-like florets in solid butter yellow, a touch greener in the closed buds at the tip. Each spike is fullest at the base and tapers to a point. Leaves are palmate, with narrow green leaflets radiating from the end of each stalk like wheel spokes. The plant forms a compact upright clump about 14 to 16 inches tall and 7 to 9 inches wide. At peak bloom several yellow spikes stand together just above the foliage mound.

Growing it with lavender

Lupines share lavender's love of sun and sharp drainage, and their early-summer spikes bloom just ahead of the first lavender flowers, handing the color off to the purple wands as they fade.

Care

Plant in full sun to light afternoon shade in average, well-drained soil that leans slightly acidic; lupines dislike heavy clay and standing water. Hardy in zones 4-8, they prefer cool nights and can fade in hot, humid summers. Cut spent spikes before they set seed to tidy the plant, and set plants where they can stay, since the long taproot resents being moved.

At a glance

Botanical name: Lupinus polyphyllus

Flower color: Butter yellow

Foliage: Green

Growth habit: Compact upright clump

Mature size: 14–16 in tall × 7–9 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 4–8

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade

Bloom start: Late-May

Peak bloom: Early-June

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Moderately resistant

Pollinator value: Great

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
