Round, blue-green leaves about three-quarters of an inch across grow in sets of three along arching stems, each rimmed with a thin line of deep pink that gets stronger in summer heat.

In early fall, clusters of bright pink star flowers open at the stem tips, and soon after the foliage takes on pink, red, yellow and orange tones. Use it as a small-scale groundcover, an edger, in rock gardens, wall crevices or fall containers.

What it looks like

Round, flat, fleshy leaves about 3/4 inch across in powdery blue-green, set in whorls of three along arching, horizontal stems, each leaf finely outlined in deep pink. In early fall, small rounded clusters of bright pink star-shaped flowers sit at the tips of the stems. In fall the leaves blush pink, red, yellow and orange. The plant is a low, spreading, rounded mound 6 to 10 inches tall and 12 to 18 inches wide, with stems radiating from the center. At peak it looks like a circle of blue-green scalloped stems tipped with pink flowers.

Growing it with lavender

This low sedum thrives in the same hot, sunny, well-drained ground as lavender, making a tidy succulent carpet along the front edge of a lavender bed or between stepping stones.

Care

Plant in full sun in average to poor, well-drained soil; it is very drought tolerant and does not like wet feet. Hardy in zones 3-9; trim off faded flower stems after bloom if you want a neater mat, and divide or replant pieces anywhere you want it to fill in.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hylotelephium sieboldii

Flower color: Bright pink

Foliage: Blue-green with a pink edge; pink, red, yellow and orange in fall

Growth habit: Low, spreading, rounded mound

Mature size: 6–10 in tall × 12–18 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: full sun

Bloom start: Early-September

Peak bloom: Late-September

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Moderately resistant

Pollinator value: Excellent

Sizes and shipping

Dormant bare-root plant, sold in boxes of 25 per variety (order in multiples of 25).
