peter-cottontail-yarrow-72-cell-plug-tray
Peter Cottontail Yarrow - 72-Cell Plug Tray

Peter Cottontail is a sneezewort-type yarrow with a softer, airier look than the common flat-topped kinds. Instead of dense plates, it carries loose sprays of rounded, ivory white flowers that read almost like baby's breath from a distance.

It grows as a low, polished mound under two feet tall and blooms for a long stretch from early summer into early fall. It suits edging, containers, rock gardens and cottage borders, and the flowers work well cut or dried. It handles sun or part shade and is seldom bothered by deer or rabbits.

What it looks like

Loose, open sprays of rounded, fully double ivory white flowers, each about half an inch across, with a button-like, ruffled center. The flowers are spaced apart in airy clusters rather than packed plates. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, green and finely toothed, 2 to 3 inches long. The plant forms a low, tidy, mounded clump 18 to 24 inches tall and 28 to 30 inches wide. At peak bloom the mound is dotted all over with small white pom-pom flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Peter Cottontail likes the same sunny, well-drained ground as lavender, and its airy white sprays soften the edges of a lavender planting and fill gaps as lavender finishes its first bloom.

Care

Grow in full sun to part shade in average, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established. Hardy in USDA zones 3-8. Deadhead or lightly shear faded sprays to keep flowers coming into fall.

At a glance

Botanical name: Achillea ptarmica

Flower color: Ivory white

Foliage: Green

Growth habit: Low, rounded mound

Mature size: 18–24 in tall × 28–30 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–8

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Mid-July

Bloom pattern: Long Blooming

Deer resistance: Resistant

Pollinator value: Great

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
