It is one of the last astilbes to bloom, peaking from late summer into early fall.

Only about 10 inches tall, it works as a groundcover in shade, at the front of a border or in containers. As a Chinese astilbe, it tolerates a bit more sun and dryness than other types. Deer and rabbits leave it alone.

What it looks like

Stiff, narrow, upright, fuzzy plumes 4 to 6 inches long of tiny lilac pink flowers, held on short, straight stems just above the foliage. Leaves are compound, toothed, coarsely textured and mid-green, forming a low, spreading carpet. The plant is about 10 inches tall in bloom and 12 to 16 inches wide, spreading over time. At peak bloom the low green mat bristles with upright lilac pink spikes.

Growing it with lavender

Astilbe needs moist, rich soil and shade, the opposite of lavender's dry, sunny bed, so plant it in a shade garden or along a damp woodland edge with hostas and ferns.

Care

Grow in part shade in rich, moist soil; this Chinese type tolerates more sun and short dry spells than other astilbes, but performs far better with steady moisture. Hardy in USDA zones 4-9. Mulch well, water in dry weather, and cut back old plumes in spring.

At a glance

Botanical name: Astilbe chinensis

Flower color: Lilac pink

Foliage: Mid-green

Growth habit: Low, spreading carpet

Mature size: 10 in tall × 12–16 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 4–9

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Early-August

Peak bloom: Late-August

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Resistant

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

Dormant bare-root plant, sold in boxes of 25 per variety (order in multiples of 25).
