Dark cones and extra-dark green leaves make the flower color look even richer.

It is a well-branched, sturdy plant about 18 to 22 inches tall and up to two feet wide, blooming from early summer into late summer. Plant it in sunny borders or containers, and leave the late flowers for the birds.

What it looks like

Single daisy-form flowers about 3 inches across; new flowers open warm orange and mature to a deep brick red, with slightly drooping overlapping petals around a dark brown cone. Flowers are held on sturdy, branched stems above the foliage. Leaves are very dark green, lance-shaped and glossy-rough. The plant is a compact, bushy clump 18 to 22 inches tall and 22 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom it shows a mix of orange and red flowers over a dark green base.

Growing it with lavender

Its warm red blooms and dark leaves make a rich contrast in front of silvery, purple-flowered lavender in the same lean, sunny soil.

Care

Give it full sun to light part shade and average to lean soil that drains well, especially over winter; once established it handles dry spells with little extra water. Hardy in zones 4 to 9, though like many hybrid coneflowers it can be short-lived in heavy or wet soil. Plants that head into fall with a full tuft of leaves at the base overwinter best, so avoid cutting it back hard and leave the last seed heads standing for winter birds.

At a glance

Botanical name: Echinacea

Flower color: Orange maturing to warm red with a dark cone

Foliage: Very dark green

Growth habit: Compact, well-branched clump

Mature size: 18–22 in tall × 22–24 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 4–9

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade

Bloom start: Late-June

Peak bloom: Mid-July

Bloom pattern: Long Blooming

Deer resistance: Resistant

Pollinator value: Excellent

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
