By summer the centers mature to creamy white, so the plant changes character as the season goes on.

It grows to about 2½ feet tall and 5 to 5½ feet wide, with a strong giant-hosta pedigree. Large clusters of near-white flowers open in early summer and bring hummingbirds and bees to the shade garden. Use it as a specimen or anchor plant in a large woodland bed.

What it looks like

Very large, heart-shaped leaves with heavy corrugation, chartreuse centers maturing to creamy white, and wide glaucous blue-green margins with streaks jetting inward. The leaf surface is thick and puckered with deep veins. The plant forms a huge, broad mound about 30 to 32 inches tall and 60 to 66 inches wide. In early summer, scapes carry large clusters of near-white trumpet flowers above the foliage. At peak the pale centers glow within the wide blue edges across the massive clump.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring as the shoots emerge.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: Near white

Foliage: Chartreuse to creamy white center with glaucous blue-green margins

Growth habit: Giant, broad mound

Mature size: 30–32 in tall × 5 ft–66 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Late-June

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 20-cell plug tray: 20 large, field-ready plugs of this variety (cells about 2¾ in. wide × 3¼ in. deep or deeper), ready to plant out or pot up.
