Each head sits on a collar of purple-tinted bracts, which deepens the color at the base. Leaves are opposite, oval to lance-shaped, dark green with toothed edges on square stems. The plant forms an upright, well-branched clump about 20 inches tall and 18 to 22 inches wide.
