Its blue-green, moderately puckered leaves have smooth margins that show off the variegation cleanly.

It forms a large mound about 29 inches tall and 5½ feet wide. White flowers peek just above the leaves in early to midsummer. It makes a handsome specimen or focal point in the woodland garden.

What it looks like

Large, rounded heart-shaped leaves in blue-green with a moderately corrugated, puckered surface and a smooth, even yellow margin. Leaves are thick with a matte, waxy coating and overlap in a wide mound about 29 inches tall and 66 inches wide. In early to midsummer, scapes 25 to 36 inches tall carry white bell-shaped flowers just above the foliage. At peak the yellow borders outline each cool blue leaf across the broad clump.

Growing it with lavender

Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed, so give this one a spot under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains well; water deeply during dry spells, especially the first summer. Hardy in zones 3-9. Cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring as the shoots emerge.

At a glance

Botanical name: Hosta

Flower color: White

Foliage: Blue-green with yellow margins

Growth habit: Large, wide mound

Mature size: 29 in tall × 66 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 3–9

Light: part sun to part shade, full shade

Bloom start: Mid-June

Peak bloom: Early-July

Bloom pattern: Single Flush

Deer resistance: Susceptible

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 20-cell plug tray: 20 large, field-ready plugs of this variety (cells about 2¾ in. wide × 3¼ in. deep or deeper), ready to plant out or pot up.
