The flowers sit right on top of a large rosette of dark green leaves, with very little bare stem showing.

At about two feet tall and wide it has real presence in the middle of a sunny border, and its strong stems hold up the heavy flowers without staking. The blooms cut and dry well.

What it looks like

Fully double pompom flowers about 4½ inches across with a dense, rounded crested center surrounded by a ring of wide, overlapping ray petals. Fresh flowers are bright magenta pink and older flowers fade to a softer medium pink, giving a two-tone look. Flowers are held close over a large, mounded rosette of dark green, lance-shaped leaves with almost no exposed stem. The plant grows 22 to 26 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom the mound is capped with many full pink pompoms.

Growing it with lavender

The pink pompoms sit well beside lavender, softening its purple with a warm rosy tone in the same sunny, well-drained bed.

Care

Give it full sun to light part shade and average to lean soil that drains well; once established it handles dry spells with little extra water. Hardy in zones 4 to 8. Snip faded flowers to keep it tidy, or leave the last round of seed heads standing for winter birds.

At a glance

Botanical name: Echinacea

Flower color: Magenta pink aging to medium pink

Foliage: Dark green

Growth habit: Mounded rosette

Mature size: 22–26 in tall × 20–24 in wide

USDA hardiness zones: 4–8

Light: full sun, part sun to part shade

Bloom start: Early-July

Peak bloom: Late-July

Bloom pattern: Long Blooming

Deer resistance: Resistant

Pollinator value: Good

Sizes and shipping

One full 72-cell plug tray: 72 young starter plugs of this variety (cells about 1⅓ in. wide × 2½ in. deep), rooted and ready to pot up into quarts or gallons.
