Party Streamers Hosta: Wavy Yellow Ribbons for Bright Shade
Save
On this page
Party Streamers hosta does not look like a typical hosta. Instead of round, cupped leaves, it makes long, narrow, strap-like yellow ribbons with strongly rippled edges that twist as they arch out from the crown. The result is loose and festive, like a bag of curling ribbon that got loose in the shade bed.
In mid to late summer, scapes 29 to 36 inches tall carry deep purple trumpets well above the yellow leaves.
Quick answer: Party Streamers is a shade plant, not a lavender bed plant. Grow it in part to full shade with morning sun or bright filtered light, in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil, and watch for slugs.

On the shady side of a lavender garden
Hostas want shade and steady moisture, exactly what lavender cannot stand. So the honest pairing is across the property: lavender in the open sun, Party Streamers under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe. What links them is color. Its deep purple flowers in late summer echo the lavender across the yard, and the bright yellow foliage lights up shade the way lavender lights up a sunny bed.

Planting and care
- Light: morning sun or bright filtered light gives the brightest gold. Hot afternoon sun can scorch the edges.
- Soil: rich and humus-heavy, evenly moist but well drained.
- Water: deeply in dry spells, especially the first summer.
- Slugs: the thinner leaves are a slug favorite, so check early and often.
- After bloom: cut spent scapes. Divide crowded clumps in early spring as shoots emerge.
Fall and winter
It is fully hardy in Michigan. After a hard frost, cut the foliage down to clear away slug eggs and debris, and make sure the crown is in well-drained soil. Watch for Hosta Virus X, which shows as mottled, streaked leaves, and discard affected plants.
Edging, pots and mass plantings
Because it grows fairly fast and spreads wider than tall, Party Streamers works as a shady edging, a mass planting under trees or a container plant with leaves spilling over the rim. Hosta foliage is listed as toxic to dogs and cats. It is offered as a 72-cell plug tray and a 20-cell plug tray; see the product pages for current availability.
Frequently asked questions
Why is it so different from other hostas?
Its narrow, rippled leaves twist as they grow, giving a loose, ribbon-like look rather than the usual round mound.
Do pollinators visit the flowers?
Yes. The tall purple trumpets have a good pollinator rating, so they add late-summer value to a shade bed.
