Planting

The three big rules

Sun, drainage and restraint.

Almost every healthy lavender we grow comes down to these. Get them right and the rest is easy.

Full sun

Give lavender at least 6–8 hours of direct sun. In shade it stretches, flowers less and stays wet longer.

Sharp drainage

Water should never pool around the crown. Plant a little high, add grit to heavy soil and use pots with holes.

Less is more

Water well while roots settle, then back off. Skip rich compost and strong fertilizer. Lavender likes a lean life.

Care questions

My plant arrived looking tired. Is that normal?

A few days in a box can leave lavender a little pale or droopy. Unbox right away, water if the soil is dry, and keep it in bright shade for 2–3 days before full sun. If something looks damaged on arrival, report it within 24 hours with photos through Returns & Claims.

Should I remove the first flowers on a new plant?

On small plugs, snipping the first flower spikes helps the plant put energy into roots. On 1-gallon plants you can enjoy the blooms, then trim lightly once they fade.

Can I grow lavender indoors?

Lavender is an outdoor plant. It can overwinter in a cool, bright spot, but it needs full sun and good air flow to thrive. Treat indoor time as a short winter stay.

How do I know which type I have?

Your plant tag and order list the cultivar name. The botanical groups guide explains English, lavandin, Spanish and more.
