Timing tips

Three dates that run the year

Last spring frost

Planting, shaping and mulch removal key off this date. New plants go in once the risk of frost has passed.

First flowers

Harvest for drying when one third to one half of the buds on a stem are open. The main prune follows right after.

First fall frost

Stop pruning about 6 weeks before it, so soft growth can harden. Winter protection goes on after the ground freezes.

How accurate are these dates?

They are estimates built from 30 years of NOAA frost records at the station nearest you. Every year is different, so watch the weather and your plants. Bloom and harvest dates also vary by cultivar.

Why is there no fall planting in my calendar?

In zones 5 and colder, fall-planted lavender often fails to root in before the ground freezes. Spring planting is more reliable there.

When can I order plants?

Pre-orders are open in all sizes. We suggest reserving about 6 months ahead. Spring plant shipping opens March 1, and summer plants are local pickup only. See shipping details.

Plan ahead for spring planting

We recommend reserving plants about 6 months ahead. Pre-orders are open in every size.
