A walk through the farm

Come take a walk through our lavender.

We are a faith-led Michigan lavender grower. Our farm is not open for public visits, so we built this walk instead. Scroll down and follow a plant from the greenhouse to your garden, with a few stops along the way.

Stop one

It starts in the greenhouse.

If you call and we don’t pick up right away, there’s a good chance we’re in the greenhouse. It’s where young lavender gets the steady, careful attention it needs before it’s ready for the world.

  • Named lavender varieties are grown from cuttings, not seed, so each plant stays true to its variety.
  • Young plants root into plug trays first, then move up into pots as their roots fill out.
  • Good light, good airflow and a light hand with water. Lavender hates wet feet, even as a baby.

Stop two

Out in the rows: 50+ varieties.

We grow more than fifty kinds of lavender, and carry 50 to 100 in stock through the seasons. They come from many botanical groups, each with its own shape, scent and bloom time.

English · L. angustifolia Lavandin · L. × intermedia Spanish · L. stoechas Portuguese · L. pedunculata French · L. dentata Chaytor’s hybrids Fern-leaf · L. multifida + rarer species

Stop three

Harvest & drying.

Summer is when lavender shows off. Timing is everything: cut too late and the buds drop, cut too early and the scent hasn’t built yet. Here’s how lavender goes from row to bundle.

  1. Watch the buds. For drying, cut when only some of the flowers on each spike have opened.
  2. Cut in the morning.Wait until the dew is gone, then cut long stems above the leaves.
  3. Bundle small.Small bunches with a rubber band, which tightens as the stems shrink.
  4. Hang to dry.Upside down in a dark, dry, airy spot until the stems snap.
