About the Product

Grape Expectations opens spring with bright grape purple leaves traced in black veins. As summer heats up, a silvery coating develops across the leaves, and by late fall they turn back to a very deep purple, giving three different looks over the season.

The leaves are broad, thick and slightly fuzzy, forming a dense, upright mound about a foot tall and 2 feet wide. Tall dark purple stems carry creamy white flowers in midsummer. It handles heat and humidity well and is a durable choice for borders, edging and containers.

What it looks like

A dense, upright mound about 12 inches tall and 24 inches wide of broad, thick, lightly fuzzy rounded leaves. In spring the leaves are vivid grape purple with black veins; by midsummer they carry a bright silver overlay with purple showing through the veins; in late fall they darken to deep purple. Tall dark purple stems reach close to 3 feet in midsummer with sprays of tiny creamy white flowers. At peak the plant is a silvered purple dome with airy white flower wands well above it.

Growing it with lavender

Its silver-washed purple leaves echo lavender's colors at a bed edge with afternoon shade, provided it gets more water than the lavender beside it.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade; best leaf color with morning sun. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly, avoiding soggy winter conditions; hardy in zones 4-9. Cut back flower stems after bloom and tidy foliage in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
