About the Product

Grape Timeless combines good-looking foliage with a long flower show. Shiny, dark purple leaves with charcoal veins form a compact, dense clump, and bright rosy pink flowers keep coming from early through late summer instead of a single flush.

Flower stems reach 18 to 20 inches, in proportion to the 8 to 10 inch mound, so the plant looks balanced in borders and containers. The blooms are long-lasting in the garden and good for cutting into small bouquets.

What it looks like

A compact, dense clump 8 to 10 inches tall and 18 to 20 inches wide of shiny, rounded, dark purple leaves marked with charcoal gray veining. Dark purple stems rise 18 to 20 inches, carrying many narrow spikes of small bright rosy pink bell flowers. At peak bloom the plant is a glossy deep purple mound under a dense, even crown of rose pink flower wands.

Growing it with lavender

The dark purple foliage and rosy pink wands make a colorful edging in front of lavender where there is some afternoon shade and a little extra water.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade, with afternoon shade recommended in hot sites. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil and water during dry spells; hardy in zones 4-9. Deadheading spent stems keeps new flowers coming through summer.

How to grow Grape Timeless

Coral Bells · Heuchera

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs are small and dry out fast. Water on arrival, keep in bright light, and harden off a week before planting. Pot 72-cell plugs into 4 in pots to bulk up, or plant 20-cell plugs straight into the bed. Shade from midday sun the first weeks.

When to plant

Spring or early fall (at least 6 weeks before freeze so roots anchor).

How deep

Set the crown exactly at soil level; the woody stem should not be buried or left exposed.

Spacing

12-18 in apart, wider for large-leaf types.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 6.0–7.5

Fix-it tip: Mix compost into clay or sand. Crowns rot in wet, heavy soil, so avoid low spots and don't pile mulch against the crown.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full sun in cool climates with moisture; full shade).

Leaf color decides: dark and amber types scorch in hot sun. Varieties bred from H. villosa handle more heat and humidity.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Semi-evergreen. Old leaves often look battered in early spring; new leaves unfurl from the center in April. Trim the old ones once fresh growth shows.
