Navajo Princess is a variegated mangave with clear, consistent cream margins framing deep blue-green centers. Only a few spots appear near the crown, so the clean two-tone coloring takes center stage.
Its rigid leaves form a fairly low, horizontal rosette that frames a container nicely. Compared to Snow Leopard, its leaves are thicker and more heavily toothed.
What it looks like
Rigid, thick, lance-shaped leaves about 1½ inches wide have deep blue-green centers edged with wide, clean cream margins, with only light spotting near the crown. Small teeth line the margins and each leaf ends in a tip spine. The leaves form a relatively low, horizontal, open rosette 8 to 20 inches tall and 18 to 32 inches wide as it matures. The rosette looks like a crisp green-and-cream star.
Growing it with lavender
Mangave loves the same full sun and sharp drainage as lavender, so a pot of it set among the lavender beds or on a sunny gravel patio makes a bold, spiky contrast for summer before it moves indoors.
Care
Plant in full sun, where the leaf color and spotting are strongest, in gritty, fast-draining soil or cactus mix, and water when the soil is dry. In the Great Lakes region, grow it as a summer container plant and bring it indoors to a bright window before frost. Hardy outdoors in zones 9 to 11.
