About the Product

Pretty in Pink fills spring shade with big clusters of bright rose-pink flowers that hold their color instead of shifting to blue as many lungworts do. The blooms sit over a low, wide clump, so the plant covers ground nicely.

After flowering, dark green leaves lightly flecked with silver keep the spot looking fresh through summer. Plant it in groups beneath trees, along a shaded path or with ferns and hostas; deer and rabbits usually pass it by.

What it looks like

Funnel-shaped flowers about half an inch long in a clear, bright rose pink, gathered in large nodding clusters at the ends of short, hairy stems. The flower clusters rise just above a low, wide mound of basal leaves. Leaves are oval to lance-shaped, 6 to 10 inches long, dark green with light to moderate silver speckling and a slightly rough texture. The plant grows 14 to 16 inches tall and spreads 24 to 28 inches wide. In full bloom it forms a broad cushion of pink flower clusters over speckled green leaves.

Growing it with lavender

Lungwort needs shade and soil that stays moist, so plant it away from the lavender in a shaded bed under trees, along a north wall, or beside hostas and ferns.

Care

Plant in part to full shade in humus-rich soil that stays evenly moist; it tolerates dry spells poorly in sun. Hardy in zones 3-9; after flowering, cut off the old flower stems so fresh leaves fill in, and divide crowded clumps in early fall if needed.
