About the Product

Rosie Posie carries loads of hot pink flowers in magenta purple calyxes just above the leaves, giving a neat, proportional look. The colorful calyxes keep the plant looking in bloom long after the flowers are spent.

It forms a dense, ball-shaped clump about 20 inches tall and a bit wider, tidier than older hummingbird mints. Use it in rock gardens, dry containers and sunny borders. The foliage is aromatic, the flowers are edible with a light anise flavor, and pollinators flock to it while deer pass it by.

What it looks like

Dense spikes 3 to 4 inches long of small tubular flowers in hot pink, set in magenta purple calyxes, for a vivid pink-and-magenta look. Spikes sit evenly just above the foliage over the whole plant. Leaves are bright green, small, oval and toothed, aromatic. The plant is a dense, compact, ball-shaped clump 18 to 22 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches wide. At peak bloom it is a rounded cushion of bright pink and magenta.

Growing it with lavender

Rosie Posie grows in the same sunny, well-drained, lean soil as lavender, and its hot pink and magenta dome looks lively in front of or between lavender plants from midsummer into fall.

Care

Give it full sun and loose, well-drained soil; it tolerates dry spells once established and dislikes soggy winter soil. Hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Leave the stems standing over winter and cut back in spring once new growth appears, since this helps the crowns survive cold, wet weather.

How to grow Rosie Posie

Hummingbird Mint / Anise Hyssop · Agastache

Give it full sun and lean, fast-draining soil. It handles heat and drought well but dies in soggy winter soil, so drainage matters more than anything else.

Hardy in zones 5a–9b

Spring after frost is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid late-fall planting in cold zones; hummingbird mints need a full season to root in.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring after frost is best so roots establish before winter. Avoid late-fall planting in cold zones; hummingbird mints need a full season to root in.

How deep

Set the crown exactly level with the soil surface, never buried. Plant on a slight mound in heavier soil.

Spacing

18–24" apart, depending on variety size.

Soil

Sandy, gravelly or loamy; avoid heavy, wet clay · pH 6.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: In clay, plant on a mound or raised bed and mix in grit or fine gravel. Skip heavy compost and manure; rich, wet soil shortens its life. Don't mulch tight against the crown.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates a few hours of light shade, with fewer flowers).

6+ hours of direct sun keeps stems sturdy and blooming. In shade plants flop and bloom less.

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

One of the later perennials to wake up. Expect new shoots from the base in mid- to late spring, often after other perennials are well up. Old stems may look dead; look low at the crown for green shoots before giving up.
