Ruby Spider is a multiple award winner with gigantic 9-inch dark ruby red flowers. Classified as an unusual spatulate form, its long, spoon-shaped petals open very wide and flat to show a large golden yellow throat and matching midribs.
It blooms in early summer on 34-inch scapes and makes a big impact planted singly or in groups.
What it looks like
Gigantic flowers about 9 inches across with long, spoon-shaped tepals in dark ruby red that open very wide and flat, a large golden yellow throat and golden midribs. Each bloom lasts a day, but many buds open in turn on branched scapes rising to about 34 inches above a fountain of long, arching, strap-shaped medium green leaves. The foliage clump is about 20 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. At peak bloom huge ruby flowers spread wide on tall scapes.
Growing it with lavender
Its dark ruby flowers make a bold backdrop for lavender in the same sunny, well-drained soil.
Care
Grow in full sun to light part shade (at least six hours of sun for the best bloom) in average, well-drained soil; once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells. Hardy in zones 3 to 9. Snap off faded flowers for a tidy look, cut bare scapes to the base after bloom and divide crowded clumps every few years.
