About the Product

Shadow Tag is a foamy bells with green leaves under a silvery overlay and dark burgundy centers that spread out along the veins. The leaf pattern stays rich through the end of the season, and the plant is semi-evergreen in milder winters.

In late spring, sprays of bubblegum pink flowers mound above the foliage on stems in proportion to the plant. It grows 10 to 12 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide, making it a good choice for edging, containers and shady borders. Both flowers and foliage can be cut.

What it looks like

A low, rounded plant 10 to 12 inches tall and 16 to 18 inches wide of lobed, maple-like leaves in green with a silvery overlay and dark burgundy blotches at the center that bleed outward along the veins. In late spring, frothy sprays of small bubblegum pink star-shaped flowers form a mound just above the leaves. At peak the plant is a patterned silver-green clump crowned with a soft pink foam of flowers.

Growing it with lavender

Foamy bells prefer shade and even moisture, so plant it in a shaded bed away from the lavender, alongside ferns, hostas or other woodland plants.

Care

Grows in full sun to full shade, though most gardens will do best with part shade. Plant in average to fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; it rots in soggy winter soil. Hardy in zones 4-9; trim old leaves in spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring or early fall.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away and keep it in bright shade, never hot sun. Plant within a few days or move into 3–4" pots. Set each plug so its top is level with the soil, and keep it evenly moist for the first month.

When to plant

Spring or early fall.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; never bury it.

Spacing

12–18" apart.

Soil

Humus-rich loam · pH 5.5–7.0

Fix-it tip: Add compost to clay or sand. Avoid low, wet spots; crowns rot from overwatering.

Sun

Part shade (tolerates full shade; more sun in cool, northern gardens).

Darker-leaved types handle more sun once established. Hot afternoon sun scorches leaves.

Dormant
New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

Often semi-evergreen; old leaves may look ragged in spring. Fresh leaves appear from the crown in early to mid-spring.

Care details are written for the whole foamy bells group; a few are our best general guidance rather than cultivar-specific testing.
