Summer Break is a free-flowering pink Peruvian lily with substantial presence in the garden. Tall, sturdy stems carry clusters of uniform flowers from midsummer into late summer, and they hold up for a long time when cut.
It has overwintered for several seasons in zone 6 and does best in well-drained soil with winter protection. Grow it in a sunny border, as a focal point or in a patio container, and enjoy cutting it for bouquets all summer.
What it looks like
Clusters of lily-like, funnel-shaped flowers 2 to 3 inches across at the tops of tall, leafy stems; petals are soft to medium pink, with the upper petals showing a pale yellow blotch and fine dark streaks. Leaves are narrow, lance-shaped, medium green and twisted at the base. The plant is upright and full, 36 to 42 inches tall and 30 to 36 inches wide. At peak bloom it is covered with pink flower clusters on many stems.
Growing it with lavender
Peruvian lily prefers richer, more evenly moist soil than lavender, so give it its own sunny bed or a large container near the patio, where its long-lasting flowers are easy to cut.
Care
Plant in full sun to part shade in fertile, well-drained soil with even moisture; set the rhizomes about 1 inch deep. Hardy in USDA zones 6-9; in zone 5 and colder, give a thick winter mulch or grow in containers moved to a protected spot. For cutting, pull stems from the base rather than cutting, which encourages more flowers.
