About the Product

Totem Pole is a tall, narrow switch grass that forms a very upright column of steel-blue leaves on powdery blue stems. Its slim base makes it ideal where you need height without width.

In early fall, the top of the plant bursts into golden seed panicles, bringing it to about 6 feet. The stems stay standing through winter, giving structure to the garden and cover for birds.

What it looks like

Narrow steel-blue leaves about ½ inch wide grow on stiff, powdery blue stems in a strongly vertical, columnar clump about 6 feet tall and 30 inches wide. In late summer to early fall, airy golden panicles open at the very top of the column. In fall the leaves turn golden tan. At peak the plant looks like a slim blue pillar topped with a golden haze.

Growing it with lavender

Totem Pole enjoys full sun like lavender and adds a tall, narrow blue accent that rises above lavender plantings without shading them.

Care

Plant in full sun in almost any soil, from sand to clay; it is drought tolerant once established but also handles wetter spots. Hardy in zones 4 to 9. Leave it standing for winter interest and bird cover, then cut it back to a few inches in early spring.

Hardy in zones 4a–9b

Spring to early summer, once soil warms. Warm-season grasses root best in warm soil; avoid late-fall planting in cold zones.

When it arrives

Your plug tray

Plugs arrive in active growth. Water the tray right away, set it in bright light out of harsh wind, and plant within a few days. If you wait, bump them into 3–4" pots. Harden off for a week before planting out, and keep the root ball moist the first 3–4 weeks.

When to plant

Spring to early summer, once soil warms. Warm-season grasses root best in warm soil; avoid late-fall planting in cold zones.

How deep

Set the crown level with the soil; don't bury the base of the stems.

Spacing

24–36" apart, by variety; compact types closer.

Soil

Adaptable: sand, loam or clay · pH 5.0–8.0

Fix-it tip: No amending needed in most soils. Don't add compost or fertilizer to rich soil; extra fertility makes tall types flop.

Sun

Full sun (tolerates light shade, with floppier stems).

6+ hours of sun keeps clumps upright and brings out red and blue leaf color. In shade, clumps open and lean.

New growth

Don’t give up on it

Is it alive? What spring looks like

A warm-season grass: it wakes up late, often not showing new green blades until mid- to late spring, weeks after cool-season grasses. Don't dig it out—look for green at the base.
