21-Cell Deep Plug Tray: Room to Root for Bigger Lavender Starts

On this page
The 21-Cell Deep Plug Tray is the big-cell option in our grower supplies. Each of its 21 cells is 4 inches deep, which gives lavender, herbs and perennials enough room to build a real root system before they head into the ground or a larger pot.
Quick answer: Choose this tray when you want sturdy, well-rooted starts rather than lots of small ones. It has 21 deep cells in a 3 x 7 layout, built-in feet and drain and vent holes. It comes in packs from 1 to 100 trays.

Why deep cells suit lavender
Lavender roots want to go down, and they hate sitting wet. A deep cell gives those roots length to grow, while the drain holes and raised feet let excess water escape and air reach the bottom of the plug. The star and hexagon cell shapes help guide roots and discourage them from circling, so plants pop out of the cell as a firm plug that transplants cleanly.
How growers use it
- Potting up: move rooted cuttings or seedlings from small cells into this tray to bulk them up.
- Finishing starts: grow larger plugs for spring sales, landscape jobs or your own rows.
- Herbs and perennials: rosemary, thyme, sage and many perennials enjoy the same deep, airy cells.
- Edibles and bedding plants: anything that benefits from a larger root ball before transplant.
Filling and watering tips
Use a loose, fast-draining mix; our Lavender Sandy Loam Potting Soil Mix is built for exactly that. Fill the cells, tap the tray to settle the soil and top off before planting. Water thoroughly, then let the surface dry slightly before watering again. Deep cells hold more moisture than shallow ones, so overwatering is the bigger risk.
Choosing a pack size
Single trays suit home propagators testing a few cuttings. Larger packs serve greenhouses, propagation centers and nurseries. See the product page for current pack sizes and availability, and visit the Wholesale Hub for larger grower orders.
Frequently asked questions
Can I reuse these trays?
Many growers do. Rinse and clean them between crops and let them dry fully before reuse.
Is this tray right for seed starting?
It is better for potting up. For starting seeds, a high-count tray like our 288-cell seed start tray saves space and soil.
