Anouk Purple Crown Lavender: A Compact Spanish Lavender Edger Save

Anouk Purple Crown lavender is a compact Spanish lavender that stays low and wide, about eight inches tall and eleven inches across. Its dark violet flower heads are crowned with purple-violet bracts, which is likely where the name came from, and it flowers over a long season starting in May.

Botanically it is Lavandula stoechas 'Anouk Deluxe 108', sold under the name Anouk Purple Crown. You will see both names on the listing; they are the same plant.

Where it fits best

At under a foot tall, Purple Crown is a front-row plant. Run it along a sunny walkway, line the edge of a raised bed or plant it in the front of a window box where taller plants would block the view. It also makes a tidy single plant in a 6- to 8-inch pot on a sunny step or table.

Its green foliage is a little brighter than the gray-green of many Spanish lavenders, so it pairs nicely with silver plants for contrast. Its fragrance is moderate, which some people prefer near a seating area where a strong resinous scent can be a lot.

Planting and winter care

Plant in full sun in soil that drains quickly: gritty, sandy or raised. In containers, use a free-draining mix and a pot with a hole in the bottom. Space plants in the ground about 10 to 12 inches apart for a continuous edge.

Purple Crown is rated for zones 6a to 9b. Spanish lavenders are generally less cold-hardy than English lavender, so at the cold edge of that range give it your warmest, best-drained spot, such as a south-facing bed against the house. For more certainty, grow it in a pot and move it to a cool, bright, frost-free place for winter. The USDA Zone Finder confirms your zone.

Season-long care

  • Deadheading: pinch or snip faded heads at the base of their stems to keep new flowers coming.
  • Watering: let the soil dry between waterings. Small pots need checking more often in hot weather.
  • Light trimming: after a big flush, a quick trim keeps the low mound full.
  • Feeding: skip it in the ground; a light feed once or twice in summer suits pots.

Flowers for the vase and drying

Purple Crown's best uses are pollinators, fragrance, dried flowers and small fresh bouquets. Its heads are rated good for both cut and dried use. Short stems make them best for bud vases, small bowls of dried heads and tucked accents in wreaths. Culinary use is not recommended.

Choosing a plant format

It is offered as a 3-inch plug, a 4-inch pot or a 1-gallon pot. For an edging run, plugs are the economical choice. See the product page for current sizes and availability, and use Notify Me there if it is not available right now.

Frequently asked questions

Is Anouk Purple Crown the same as Anouk Deluxe 108?

Yes. Anouk Deluxe 108 is the cultivar name and Anouk Purple Crown is the name it is sold under.

How tall does it get?

About eight inches tall and eleven inches wide, which keeps it firmly in the front row.

Will it survive winter outdoors?

It is rated for zones 6a to 9b. Excellent drainage and a sheltered spot improve the odds at the cold end; a pot brought indoors is the safest route.
