Anouk Deluxe 1304 Lavender: Strong Scent at the Edge of a Path Save

Anouk Deluxe 1304 lavender packs a strong scent into a very low plant. It grows only about eight inches tall and eleven inches wide, with gray-green foliage and flowers in dark violet-blue and purple-violet. Among the compact Anouks, it is one of the few rated strong for fragrance, which makes placement worth a little thought.

It is Lavandula stoechas 'Anouk Deluxe 1304', a Spanish lavender that starts blooming in early May and reblooms freely through the season.

Placing a low, fragrant lavender

Spanish lavender's scent lives largely in its leaves, so you smell it most when the foliage is touched. A low plant at the edge of a walkway, at the base of porch steps or beside a garden bench gets brushed by ankles, hands and dogs all day. Set plants about 10 to 12 inches apart along a sunny path and the edge stays fragrant without anyone having to bend down.

It is not a groundcover for walking on, though. Keep it just beside the stepping stones, not between them where feet land. The plant will forgive a brush; it will not forgive a boot.

Planting and drainage

Paths and patios often have compacted soil, so loosen the planting area well and mix in coarse grit or sand if water lingers after rain. Better yet, use a slightly raised edge. Give it full sun, at least six hours a day. In pots, use a gritty mix in a container with a drainage hole and set it where people pass by.

Care through the season

  • Water: regularly until it roots in, then only when the soil is dry. Pavement reflects heat, so check edging plants more often in hot spells.
  • Deadheading: snip faded heads at the base of their stems. High rebloom follows.
  • Trim: after a big flush, a light shear keeps the edge even.
  • Feeding: little or none in the ground; a light feed for pots.

Winter planning

Anouk Deluxe 1304 is rated for zones 6a to 9b, and Spanish lavender is generally less cold-hardy than English lavender. A path edge along a south-facing wall or a sunny patio can be a few degrees warmer than open ground, which helps at the cold edge of its range. For certainty in harsh winters, grow it in pots and bring them into a cool, bright, frost-free spot until spring. The USDA Zone Finder confirms your zone.

Using the flowers

Grow it for scent, color and pollinators. It is rated good for cut flowers and fair for drying, so short stems in a bud vase are the best indoor use. Culinary use is not recommended.

Choosing a plant format

It is offered as a 3-inch plug, a 4-inch pot or a 1-gallon pot. Plugs are the economical way to edge a long path. See the product page for current sizes and availability, and use Notify Me there if it is not available right now.

Beside them is better. It handles being brushed but not stepped on.

About eight inches tall and eleven inches wide at maturity, among the lowest of the strong-scented Anouks.
