Athena Gold False Sunflower: Petal-Packed Yellow for Lavender Beds
Save
On this page
Athena Gold® false sunflower is a very compact Heliopsis with daisy-like blooms about 2½ to 3 inches across, packed with several rows of bright sunny yellow petals around a small golden-orange center. All those petals mean each flower holds on for a long time. The plant stays under 2 feet tall, a bushy clump of glossy, deep green, toothed leaves capped with yellow from early July for six to eight weeks.
Quick answer: Plant Athena Gold in full sun to light shade and average, well-drained soil at the front or middle of a lavender border. It handles heat and some drought once established. Deadhead or cut flowers for bouquets to extend bloom. Hardy in zones 3 to 9.

Yellow and purple, in the right proportions
Most false sunflowers are tall prairie plants that tower at the back of a border. Athena Gold is scaled down, which means it can sit right beside lavender instead of looming over it. Yellow and purple are complementary colors, so its sunny flowers make lavender spikes look richer, and the glossy dark leaves add contrast to lavender's matte silver.
It opens in early July as lavender peaks and keeps going for weeks after the harvest, so the color in the bed does not end when you cut your bundles. Put it in the front or middle of a sunny lavender border, in combination containers, or in groups along a path. Give lavender its airflow by spacing the two a little apart. Plan it in the Companion Plant Planner.
Planting and care
- Soil: average and well drained. It does not need the leanest spot in the bed, but it should never sit wet.
- Water: regular water through its first season, then it handles heat and some drought.
- Deadheading: keeps flowers coming. Cutting bouquets counts.
- Air: powdery mildew is the most common problem, especially in crowded, still-air spots. Spacing helps.
- Winter: very hardy in Michigan. Cut back in late fall, or leave seed heads for birds and cut back in spring.
Red aphids sometimes cluster on the stems in early summer. A strong spray of water usually moves them along.
An excellent cut flower
Athena Gold is rated excellent for cutting. The petal-packed blooms last well in a vase, and the more you cut, the more it flowers. Bright yellow false sunflowers and fresh lavender in a mason jar is a summer table centerpiece that takes two minutes to make. Plan a cutting row in the Cut Flower Planner.
Plug tray or bare root
It is offered as a 72-cell plug tray for growers and larger plantings, and as a bare root plant for a few clumps in a home border. See each product page for current availability.
