Finnegan Lavender Seeds: Classic English Lavender, the Slow Way Save

Grow a little piece of our farm in your own backyard. Our Finnegan Lavender Seeds are Lavandula angustifolia, the classic English lavender. Think of this packet as a rewarding gardening project rather than an instant win: lavender seeds are slow and irregular to germinate, and patience is part of the fun.

Seeds or plants?

Both are good ways to grow lavender. They just suit different gardeners.

Starting from seed Starting from a plant
A hands-on project from the very beginning A head start of months
Many potential plants from one packet One plant, ready to go in the ground
Some natural variation between seedlings Plants that match their variety closely
Needs indoor space, light and patience Needs a sunny, well-drained spot and not much else

If you love the idea of watching lavender go from a speck to a shrub, seeds are for you. The Lavender Plant Library lists the varieties we grow as plants if you want both.

What cold stratification means

Many growers find that chilling lavender seeds in a damp medium for a few weeks before sowing encourages sprouting. Fold the seeds into a barely damp paper towel or a spoonful of moist seed mix, seal it in a labeled bag and leave it in the refrigerator. Then sow on the surface of a light seed-starting mix, since the seeds need light, and keep it lightly moist and warm.

Living with uneven sprouting

A few seeds may pop up early while others take weeks. Do not toss the tray after the first flush. Keep conditions steady, move early seedlings into bright light and pot them up once they have true leaves. Later sprouts can catch up. Once seedlings are sturdy and the frost has passed, harden them off and plant them in full sun.
