Krossa Regal Hosta: A Vase-Shaped Blue Hosta with Lavender Spires

On this page
Krossa Regal hosta breaks the hosta mold. Instead of a low mound, its frosty blue-green, wavy-edged leaves rise on long stems into an upright, vase-shaped clump about 40 inches tall, narrow at the base and flaring at the top. In mid to late summer, slender flower stems shoot up 4 to 6 feet, lined with widely spaced lavender trumpets that hummingbirds visit.
It holds an Award of Garden Merit, and in fall the leaves sometimes take on an orange-yellow tint before they go.
Quick answer: Grow Krossa Regal in part to full shade, especially in the afternoon, in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. It is hardy in zones 3-9 and works in the middle or back of a shady border or in a large container.

The most lavender-minded hosta
Hostas cannot share lavender's hot, dry beds, but Krossa Regal comes closest in spirit. Its tall lavender flower spires bloom from mid-July into August, just as the lavender season winds down in the sun, so the color carries on into the shade. Its frosty blue leaves pick up the cool tones of lavender foliage, and its upright, vase shape adds height where most hostas stay low.
Use it in the middle or back of a shady border, under trees or along the north side of the house with ferns and astilbe. Plan the shady and sunny beds together in the Companion Plant Planner.
Planting and care
- Light: shade, especially in the afternoon. The blue is a waxy coating that heat and strong sun wear away.
- Soil: rich and humus-heavy, evenly moist but well drained.
- Water: deeply in dry spells, especially in the first summer.
- Slugs: the thick leaves hold up well against slugs.
- After bloom: cut spent flower stems to the base.
- Fall: cut the leaves down after a hard frost and keep heavy, wet mulch off the crown.
In a large container
The vase shape makes Krossa Regal a natural for a big pot on a shaded patio. The leaves arch out over the rim, and the tall flower stems become a summer focal point. Keep container soil evenly moist; pots dry faster than garden beds.
Planting from bare root
Krossa Regal is offered as a bare root plant. Plant it with the crown at soil level, spread the roots, and water well. Divide crowded clumps in early spring as shoots emerge. See the product page for current availability.
