Leading Lady Pink Bee Balm: A Short, Early Start to Summer

On this page
Leading Lady Pink bee balm gets bee balm season going early. Its bright pink flower heads open in early June in Michigan and last about five weeks, each floret fading to a pale throat where small dark spots stand out on the lower lip. Packed in tiers on short stems, the flowers cover the top of a low mound that never gets much taller than your knee.
Quick answer: Leading Lady Pink is a compact, early bee balm for zones 4 to 8. Grow it in sun or part shade in soil that stays evenly moist, in a bed bordering your lavender, and divide it every two to three years.

Why choose a short bee balm
Classic bee balm can reach shoulder height, lean on its neighbors and spread farther than you planned. The Leading Lady types were bred to stay low and tidy, which opens up spots the tall ones never fit: the front edge of a border, a patio container, a small yard or a rain garden where you want color without a jungle. Trials also showed this one has above-average powdery mildew tolerance, a welcome trait in a family known for it.
Designing a pink and purple border
Bright pink and lavender purple are an easy color pair, but these two plants need different soil. Lavender wants dry, lean ground; Leading Lady Pink wants richer soil that never dries out completely. The simplest plan is two beds side by side: lavender in the sunniest, best-drained spot, and bee balm along the lower or richer edge where a hose reaches easily.
Because this bee balm finishes before the hottest part of summer in most years, it hands the stage to lavender as the main English lavender bloom peaks. Use the Companion Plant Planner to try spacing and the Bloom Calendar to line up the timing.
A season with Leading Lady Pink
- Early spring: clear last year's stems if you left them up. Divide crowded clumps now, every two to three years.
- Late spring: water as new growth fills in. A layer of compost around, not on, the crowns helps hold moisture.
- June bloom: enjoy the hummingbirds. Water during dry weeks so the flowers last.
- After bloom: trim spent heads to tidy the mound; rebloom is light, so do it for looks.
- Fall: cut stems back or leave them for winter. It is very winter hardy in Michigan.
Leaves, flowers and fragrance
The foliage has a strong minty, oregano-like scent when brushed, which is part of why deer pass it by. Leaves and flowers are edible like other bee balms and are used in herbal tea or as a colorful garnish. The flowers make good cut stems for small arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
How long does Leading Lady Pink bloom?
About five weeks starting in early June, with a peak around mid-June. Expect only light rebloom after that.
Is it a native plant?
Bee balms are North American wildflowers, and this is a garden hybrid bred from them. It still draws the same native bees, butterflies and hummingbirds.
Why is it sold as a full plug tray?
The 72-cell tray is made for growers and for large plantings, such as a pollinator strip or a row of containers. See the product page for current availability and the Wholesale Hub for more trays.
