Minuteman Hosta: Crisp White Edges That Light Up Shade
Save
On this page
Minuteman hosta is one of the crispest white-edged hostas you can grow. Its broad, heart-shaped leaves are very dark green with a wide border of pure white, and the contrast is so clean it looks drawn with a ruler. It grows quickly into a dense mound about 18 inches tall and 30 inches wide.
Hostas want shade and steady moisture, the opposite of lavender's hot, dry bed. Minuteman belongs on the shady side of the property, where it can do for dark corners what lavender does for sunny ones.
Quick answer: Plant Minuteman in part to full shade in rich, humus-heavy soil that stays evenly moist but drains. Water deeply in dry spells the first summer, cut spent scapes after bloom and divide crowded clumps in early spring.

White edges for an evening garden
White shows up long after other colors fade at dusk. A row of Minuteman along a shaded path or under a tree glows in the evening, which makes it a good choice near a patio you use after work. It is also a natural specimen: one plant in a large container by a shaded door looks finished all season.
How does that relate to lavender? Most gardens built around a sunny lavender bed still have a north wall, a big maple or a damp low spot. Minuteman is a dependable answer for those places, and the pale lavender flowers it sends up in early summer nod to the sunny side of the garden. Plan both areas in the Companion Plant Planner.
Planting and care
- Site: part to full shade. Morning sun is fine; hot afternoon sun can scorch the white edges.
- Soil: rich, humus-heavy, evenly moist and well drained.
- Water: deep watering during dry spells, especially the first summer.
- Mulch: a thin layer keeps roots cool; keep it off the crown so slugs have fewer hiding spots.
- After bloom: cut spent scapes. Divide crowded clumps in early spring as shoots emerge.
Deer are fond of hostas, so in open country gardens a fence or repellent may be needed.
Plug tray formats
Minuteman is offered as a 72-cell plug tray and a 20-cell plug tray. The 72-cell tray suits growers and large plantings; the 20-cell tray gives fewer, larger plugs for smaller projects. See each product page for current availability, or visit the Wholesale Hub for tray orders.
Frequently asked questions
How fast does Minuteman grow?
It is a quick grower for a hosta and fills out toward its 30-inch width in a few seasons.
Can it take some sun?
Gentle morning sun is fine. Keep it out of hot afternoon sun, and never plant it in the open lavender bed.
Does it grow well in a pot?
Yes. Use a large container with drainage holes and water more often than you would in the ground.
