Needlepoint Ornamental Onion: Tidy White Globes for the Bed's Edge Save

Needlepoint ornamental onion is a compact, fine-textured allium with crisp, pure white flower clusters in late summer and early fall. Its thread-like leaves and small, refined blooms give it a clean, polished look, a bit like embroidery on the edge of a bed, which may be how it got its name.

Unlike chive-type alliums that can seed around, it stays well behaved and tidy, which makes it easy to trust at the front of a lavender planting.

A clean edge after harvest

By August, most lavender has been cut and the bed has gone quiet and gray-green. Needlepoint steps in with an even scatter of small white balls over a fine green tuft, a bright, crisp edge that makes the whole bed look cared for. White also flatters any lavender cultivar, purple, pink or white, so you never have to worry about a clash.

Its fine, grassy leaves echo lavender's narrow foliage, so the edging feels related to the planting behind it. For a two-tone effect, alternate it with a purple-flowered summer allium; the white and rosy purple globes bloom in the same season. Lay out the edge in the Companion Plant Planner.

Planting and care

  • Planting: set the bare root clump with the crown at soil level, water well and keep it lightly moist until growth starts.
  • Soil: lean to average and well drained, the same ground lavender likes.
  • Water: regular watering the first season; drought tolerant afterward.
  • Cleanup: trim any tired foliage in fall or early spring.
  • Dividing: split clumps in spring every few years to keep them vigorous or to extend the edging.

Spacing an allium edge

At 16 to 20 inches wide, plants set about 12 to 15 inches apart will knit into a continuous ribbon. Keep the row a little in front of the lavender, not tucked against the lavender's base, so air can move around the lavender crowns.

Frequently asked questions

Will Needlepoint seed all over the garden?

No. It is known for staying tidy, unlike chive-type alliums that can seed around.

Can I eat it?

It is grown as an ornamental. The leaves have a mild onion scent when brushed, but it is not a kitchen plant.

Is it good for pollinators?

Yes. Butterflies and bees visit the flowers in late summer, when nectar is welcome.
