Rapido White Bellflower: Crisp White Cups for Moon Gardens

On this page
Rapido White Carpathian bellflower is the white counterpart to Rapido Blue: an early, uniform bellflower that forms a tidy clump just 5 to 7 inches tall. Its open, upward-facing cups are pure white with a faint pale green center, 1 to 1.5 inches across, sitting on short stems just above dark green leaves.
White flowers at ground level do something blue ones cannot: they catch the last light of evening and seem to glow after sunset.
Quick answer: Plant Rapido White in front of lavender in full sun to part shade and moist, well-drained soil. Water it in dry spells, remove faded flowers for repeat bloom through summer, and keep heavy mulch off its crown in winter.

White in front of purple
White is the easiest color to pair with lavender, because it makes the purple look deeper. A low line of Rapido White along the front of a lavender bed frames the planting like a crisp white border, and it blooms right alongside the first lavender spikes in June.
If you have a patio or porch you use on summer evenings, try it in a moon garden: white bellflowers, silver lavender foliage and other pale flowers that stay visible as the light fades. It shares lavender's liking for sun and drainage but wants water during dry spells, so the outer edge of the bed is the best spot. Lay it out in the Companion Plant Planner.
Planting and care
- Site: full sun to part shade in moist, well-drained soil.
- Heat: light afternoon shade in hot spells helps the bloom last longer.
- Deadheading: remove faded flowers and it repeats through summer.
- Watering: water at the base; good drainage and airflow keep the crown from rotting in humid weather.
- Pests: slugs and snails are the usual nibblers.
- Dividing: every few years in spring if the center thins out.
Winter
It is hardy in Michigan if the crown stays dry through winter. Well-drained soil, no heavy mulch on top and a quick tidy of the foliage in spring are all it needs.
Small spaces and pots
Rapido White is a good fit for rock gardens, wall crevices and small containers. Mix it with Rapido Blue in a shallow bowl for a two-tone pot, or line a path with alternating blue and white clumps.
