Sunday Gloves Daylily: Fragrant Near-White Blooms for Evening Save

Sunday Gloves daylily opens near-white flowers about 5 1/4 inches across, with loosely ruffled petals, a pale yellow eye and a tiny celery green throat. The blooms are notably fragrant, especially in the evening and on warm days.

It is very easy to grow, and it looks its best in the hour after sunset, when white flowers seem to glow on their own.

An evening garden with lavender

White flowers and lavender are a favorite pairing for patios and porches. In daylight, Sunday Gloves' soft white makes lavender's purple look richer. At dusk, the purple fades into the shadows while the white blooms keep shining, and the sweet daylily scent mixes with the smell of warm lavender foliage. It is the kind of combination that makes you linger outside a little longer.

The two share a site: full sun and well-drained soil. Sunday Gloves' 27-inch scapes rise a bit above most English lavender, so set it behind or between lavender groups, leaving space around each lavender crown for airflow. Plant it near a seating area or along a path you walk in the evening. Plan the layout in the Companion Plant Planner.

Planting and care

  • Light: at least six hours of sun for the best bloom.
  • Soil: average and well drained. Once established it handles heat, clay and dry spells.
  • Rebloom: each flower lasts one day. Remove spent scapes promptly after the main flush to encourage later scapes.
  • Dividing: split crowded clumps every few years.
  • Winter: a dormant type that dies back fully in fall and is fully hardy in Michigan. Clean up foliage after a hard frost and avoid soggy winter soil.

In wet summers, watch for leaf streak and leaf spot. Like most pale daylilies, the flowers may spot after a hard rain.

Format

Sunday Gloves is offered as a dormant bare root plant. See the product page for current availability, or the Wholesale Hub for larger bare root orders.
