About Iowa Lavender
Iowa Lavender is a small family farm on the edge of Ames run by Jason and Jessica Mortvedt. After visiting a lavender farm on vacation, they began researching the crop in 2019, set out their first 150 plants in May 2020 and added 100 more in 2021. Jessica began making handcrafted goods from that very first harvest, and the products are still made from lavender the family grows and cuts themselves.
This is not an everyday stop. The farm opens to the public four times each summer, and its contact page describes public u-pick lavender events in June and August. Exact dates and times are announced each year through the farm's social pages and email newsletter, so sign up if you want to plan around a bloom. The in-person gift shop opens during those special events, and otherwise by appointment.
The shop focuses on balms and dried flowers: a lavender salve, a pain relief salve, a lavender mint lip balm, premium dried lavender buds and seasonal gift sets. You can also find the family at markets around Iowa, and the online shop ships or offers pickup at the farm. Groups can ask about private events, small gatherings and farm tours through the contact form. The family's daughters have shown the farm's dairy goats at the Iowa State Fair.
Ames is a college town with plenty to do between open days. Works of Glass, a glass art studio and gallery in Ames, is about 15 minutes away.
