About Lavandas de las Sierras (Estancia El Pantanoso)

Estancia El Pantanoso is a family ranch in the Ventania hills of southwestern Buenos Aires province, at km 182 of Ruta 76, roughly 23 to 25 km from Sierra de la Ventana. Ricardo Staudt bought the land in the 1930s, when it was a wool estancia. His granddaughter Léony Staudt and her husband, engineer Bertrand Laxague, began planting lavender in 1989, and the crops have been certified organic since 1992. The main crop is true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), grown alongside lavandin, rosemary, sage, thyme and savory. A February 2018 fire burned much of the planting, and the aromatic fields went from about 120 hectares to around 50, about 35 of them lavender.

The fields turn purple from mid-November, and harvest usually runs from early December into early January. The estancia opened to visitors in 2020 under the name Lavandas de las Sierras. Guided tours cover the lavender and herb fields, the cattle and the beehives, and end at the farm shop. Two streams cross the property, and there is a roughly two-hour hike in the hills on a trail called the Camino del Inca, plus forest walks and picnics by the water.

The shop sells dried lavender by the bag, lavender essential oil and hydrosol, other herb oils, sleep pillows, sachets and bouquets. For overnight stays, two restored ranch houses, La Casa del Escritorio and El Chalecito, each have two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a living room, and pets are welcome. The old kitchen building, with a large fireplace, can host big group barbecues.
