About Preston County Inn

Preston County Inn is a Federal-style brick house on Kingwood's Main Street, built in 1857 by attorney James A. Brown as a wedding gift for his wife, Isabel. She died of smallpox only a year later, and Brown left her belongings, sewing included, as she had left them. The house has offered lodging and meals for more than 77 years, with guest rooms and a large kitchen and dining room added in 1948. Seven fireplaces, with their hearths and mantels restored, are spread across the two main floors.

The restaurant on the first floor describes itself as casual fine dining with American and international touches. The menu runs from burgers, sandwiches and salads to steaks, seafood and pasta: a coffee-and-molasses rubbed Angus rib-eye, a seafood platter, shrimp and lobster in sherry cream, and a bourbon-glazed meatloaf. It has a full bar, banquet rooms for private parties, and outdoor seating in three spots during summer, and it won Best Buffet in the Best of Preston awards in 2024 and 2025.

Upstairs are eight guest rooms, four singles and four suites, each with private bath, heat and air conditioning, Wi-Fi and TV, and every stay includes a continental breakfast. Guests can use the screened porch. The inn is non-smoking.

Stone House Lavender in Fairmont is roughly 40 minutes west, so a summer day can pair the lavender fields with dinner and an overnight in Kingwood.
